October 16th-18th, 2013 Pennsylvania---Amish Country!

Last night while finishing my Vermont blog entry, Lennie reminded me that we have a 6:30am wake up call! Now why'd he have to go & ruin the rest of my night!?!
And so it seems I barely fell asleep & he was telling me it was time to get up! I could already smell the coffee in the kitchen. Len had taken Otis out to potty & Otis was now waiting for his breakfast! I "hurry" to get ready that coffee is really smelling good, but....Lennie is fixing coffee in our To-Go mugs, no idle time this morning! As I take Otis for his last potty walk, Len starts the RV disconnection!
After Otis does his"business" I let him off the leash (no one is at the campgrounds but us) he makes a mad dash back to Lennie & the RV!
Think he's ready to roll!?!
The car's connected to the bus & we're off!
The road out of Pownal is beautiful!
.
But it's not long before we have to jump on the Interstate to make good time.
Our destination is Intercourse, Pa.
Even the fall foliage along the Interstate is pretty impressive!
We reach our destination of Beacon Hill Campground in Intercourse, Pa shortly after 4:00pm.
This campground overlooks an Amish Farm! We are parked so close to the farm that not only can we see & hear the animals we can SMELL them too!!!
Otis LOVES the smell of the wild! But the Amish horse & buggies drive him crazy & he tries to chase after each one he sees.
Poor dog is going to be wore out trying to catch the horse & buggies. Good thing we're only here for a couple of days!!!
It isn't just the Amish culture in these parts that make it so interesting to visit here. The farm scattered countryside is just beautiful!
Of course, the Amish families just add to the countryside!
It's a family affair....
.
Even the dogs!

There are LOTS & LOTS of shops to go through here in Intercourse & surrounding towns. We are only here for 2 days so I have to do some fast looking!!!!
While I look in the shops that have Crafts, Fabrics or Souvenirs, Lennie will only come in shops that have FOOD SAMPLES, & there's plenty of that type of shop. When I'm in the shops, Lennie is outside with the rest of the husbands, trying to solve the problems of the world!?!
(I said before Lennie knows NO strangers!)

After some "Shop-walking" we go back to the RV for lunch & to get Otis! We brought Otis a treat! We bought him a bone at one of the Amish meat markets!
The Amish aren't just known for their strict religious beliefs, or their "plain" way of life,
but also their Home Style cooking & that's what we're here for! We plan to go to a Amish Home Style smorgasbord tomorrow, in the meantime we stop at Bird-in-the-Hand Bakeshop, an Amish bakery, just for a snack before we indulge tomorrow!
Lennie had a piece of Shoo-fly pie while I had a
Red Velvet Whoopie Pie! YUM!!!
I can't wait for tomorrow, more Amish countryside, more shops, & then.....the Smorgasbord!

Here it is......our last day in Amish Country!!!! We have coffee & cereal for breakfast. We're eating light because today is the day we INDULGE at the Amish smorgasbord!!!
We go on a nice long drive today, both Otis & "Flat Stanley" are on board! We don't have to drive farther than a block to see countryside.......
<-the farm behind our campground
but we drove for many, many enjoyable miles!
.
to see farmland &
.
.
some covered bridges!

We went into a variety of shops, I went into several fabric stores, bought some fabric. I keep thinking I'm going to surprise myself & actually construct something!?! Of course we went into some sample stores!  Lennie did buy some cheese & some mustard for pretzel dipping, he'll probably get more use out of his purchase than I will out of mine!?!
Now......the main event!!!! We're hungry enough for a late lunch/early dinner, & Otis has "tried" to catch more than enough Amish horse & buggies. We're off to eat!!! We chose Miller's Smorgasbord.
It's been in operation since !929.It wouldn't have really mattered which Amish Restaurant we chose, they're all good!  We go in!
It's a HUGE restaurant, with plenty of room & no waiting. We could begin our feast immediately, & that we did!
Lennie was sooooo happy to finally have fried chicken!!!! He cleaned his plate real good!
I did too & rewarded myself with a piece of chocolate pecan pie!
Yuuummmmyy!!!
We had some leftover meat scraps for Otis, some chicken & beef.Being a dog owner you ALWAYS have some type of bag on your persons! I bagged up the leftovers for Otis. When I offered Otis his "treat" he turned his nose up at them???? Silly dog. I knotted the bag put it in the cup holder between our seats intending to try him again later at the RV & we continued. We had to make a stop at Walmart before returning to the RV, & so....Otis has to wait in the car....Back at the RV we start to unload everything, I reach for the bag of leftovers &....it's EMPTY!!!! What KNOT!?! I guess Otis thought we were in Walmart too long!?!
Our day is over now, it's sunset over Amish Country!
I no sooner took this picture of sunset, when Lennie pointed to the sky & lo & behold...there was the moon rising!
and the moon once again just before bed...

A person could really spend more time here in Intercourse & surrounding towns. If I really knew how to sew I could have spent a lot more money in the fabric stores! As for the stores with samples & the many, many Amish style smorgasbords, so sooooooo good, but they could be hazardous to your health!!!
Tomorrow morning we leave, our destination  is....Front Royal, Virginia. Are you ready for a visit Theresa!?! Ready or not here we come!!!!

  1. What is Lennie doing with that big red X on his back? He is advertising that he is a target? Representing the Red Cross? Asking for help???? WHAT???? LOL. Nice countryside shots in this album and like the covered bridges too.
