October 21,2013 Mt Airy, N.Carolina Mayberry RFD!!!

This morning came far earlier than I wanted it to! We're leaving Front Royal & Lennie wants to arrive in Mt Airy, N. Carolina in time to get the infamous pork chop sandwich!I'm not sure my eyes are open as we have a quick bagel & coffee. We're on the road....
we only made one pit stop & the only one who got out to pee was OTIS!
I was so tired when we left I know I nodded off a couple times before we finally saw our exit!
& we arrived at the Mayberry Campground exactly at noon! Lennie was so excited all we did was connect the electricity, water & bring out the slides, then we went right downtown to "Mayberry"
making our way to the Snappy Lunch
The Snappy Lunch opened in 1923. It's the only business in Mt Airy that was mentioned on The Andy Griffith Show. I'm not sure if the mention on the show made the Snappy Lunch so famous, or the great pork chop sandwiches they serve! There's always a line.
We took Flat Stanley with us, but because we knew we were going in a restaurant, "Mr Otis" stayed at the RV....
We didn't need a menu, we already knew we were having the pork chop sandwich.I guess they offer other items on the menu??? I think everyone was there for the pork chop! It's topped with chili sauce, coleslaw & mayo!
After our lunch we went a few doors down to.... DESSERT!
where I had my favorite...a red velvet cupcake, & Lennie had a fried apple pie. Flat Stanley just watched as we ate! It was fun walking around the town, looking at all the Mayberry sights.
.
The best part tho is the section of town that has the real Mayberry effect, the old jail
.
You can actually tour "Mayberry" in this vintage 62 Ford cruiser!

One of the sights they point out to you on the tour, is the real boyhood home of Andy Griffith

We went back to the RV to pick up Otis & take a drive to Pilot Mountain, tho on the Andy Griffith show it was called Mt Pilot. The town of Pilot Mountain is a little historic town, we kept looking for Barney Fife's Mt Pilot "Fun Girls" but didn't see any! The Pilot Mountain State Park had more to offer than the "Fun Girls"!
.

.
Maybe the "Fun Girls" were no longer at Pilot Mountain, but the fun was still there....
Back at the campgrounds
Lennie connects the car up to the RV, I know we're leaving in the morning, but this early connection....I hope it doesn't mean we're leaving at the crack of dawn???
We had a very light dinner, that pork chop sandwich stayed with us a long time.
As Lennie was channel surfing, guess what was on TV!?!
You know we had to watch it!!!

Tomorrow we head off to Maggie Valley, N. Carolina. The fall leaves should be peak colors. We'll be spending a week there.Maggie Valley is our last stop this year before we head back to Florida......
