There's no coffee brewing this Sunday morning, because coffee & sweet rolls are offered to all Campers at the office! Of course Lennie & I walked down there! On our walk back to our RV, I saw 3 deer & one of them stopped at another neighboring RV for a drink of water, from the DOG BOWL!
Today we have nothing planned, this relaxing is getting addictive! For dinner tonight we are having an experiment!!! Lennie read a recipe on a travel blog, How to cook a whole chicken....NO PEEKING!!!! On grocery day we bought a 6lb whole chicken. Today we are cooking it! It's got to be on the grill 90 minutes! That seems like a long time for a chicken??? So we spray the chicken with olive oil & season it up....
Going to the grill! |
NO PEEKING now for 90 minutes!
The chicken is done, hope it's a success, we don't have a backup dinner planned!?!
SUCCESS!!!! That chicken was soooooooo juicy & tender! We'll definitely do that again!
For dessert we had Banana Cream Pie, low-fat but still yummy, & a great way to end the evening........!
Monday June 23,2014 Nothing today my friends. Just the regular routine. I did laundry here at the RV park while Lennie & Otis drove up to "the BUG"
to make some phone calls!
We had some rain today, not really a storm just some rain with some thunder, enough to make Otis nervous, & seek comfort!
Tomorrow we're going to be "TOURIST"!!!!
Tuesday June 24, 2014 This morning's routine starts out slightly different than all our other mornings! Lennie goes for his regular walk, but Otis & I are not having quality time, because I am getting up & getting ready EARLY for this mornings Tourist attraction!?! When Len gets back he too gets ready, I have already taken Otis on his potty walk.....a quick cup of coffee & a bagel & we are out the door by 8:30am to start our day! Where'd we go???? Manitou Springs to tour: CAVE OF THE WINDS!
& pretty soon we hear our tour being called. We're told to go to the back of the gift shop by the black bear!
We bought our tickets Online so we just have to pick them up at the ticket window.
& of course we're a little early for our tour so that gives us time to look around the gift shop, & lobby area.
We go out on the balcony to take in the scenery....
When this cave was first discovered & later opened for tours in the early 1900's only the RICH could afford the entrance fee of $1.00 (about a weeks wage at that time).Tourist arrived to tour the cave by horse drawn wagons. At that time, there was only one place in the cave where you could stand up, the rest of the tour was on your hands & knees. Picture women of that era on their hands in knees in their long skirts.....
If you look close, you will see the remains of a rope ladder hanging from this opening. This rope ladder is the original rope ladder from the beginning of tours at Cave in the Winds. The tourist would climb up this ladder, then crawl to the next room, again picture the women in their long skirts. There was no electricity in the cave till 1907, all tours were led by candles, later by lanterns.A tour back then, crawling on their hands & knees took over 5 hours!!!!
Tobin said he would answer any questions he could, I only had one questions for him..."How come we didn't see any BATS!?!" He said between our noise & lights, the bats were lying low! Good enough for me!!!
Good tour, we enjoyed it! We're going back into Manitou Springs (Otis is at the RV!) to walk around a bit, but mainly for lunch!!!
This Bistro is where we we stopped for lunch. The Bistro was just one of the businesses in this 110 room establishment. It was also a hotel & other shops.
By now Lennie is feeling guilty about leaving Otis home alone for so long. So on our way back to the RV, yes....we first stop at McDonald's for a McDouble! Then proceed to Mountaindale RV Park. Driving along our gauge tells us we have a low tire & then.....there's that distinct rumbling sound of a flat tire. We're on a real busy highway & the stretch of the highway has no shoulder, just gravel. Lennie drives across the highway hoping the other side has some shoulder, but noooooo same situation. We get out & start the task of changing the tire. NO PICTURES here, nothing worse than car trouble, even a flat tire is frustrating. During the process of changing the tire, a car stopped & a good Samaritan got out & helped Lennie change the tire!!! (I still decided against taking pictures!?!) When the tire was changed Lennie offered to pay the guy something, but he said NO & they just shook hands & they went their way, & we went our way! There are still good people out there willing to help a stranger!
Soooooo we got home on the "donut"
& Otis got his McDoubles!
From Mountaindale RV Park, we are not that far from Fort Carson. Anytime we drive into downtown Colorado Springs we have to pass right by the Fort.Tonight they must have been having some kind of military maneuvers going on. We kept hearing the boom-boom sound of artillery & helicopters.at bed time...I don't know if it was thunder booming or Fort Carson, at any rate the noise was enough that Otis weaseled his way into our bed by whimpering in fear.......!
This won't be a good night's sleep!!!!
OOhhh, that chicken looks good. How'd you keep it from flaring up and burning on the bottom?? I don't cook well on the grill but things do taste good with that method of cooking!!! I LOVE all the beautiful pine trees at your park. I would love to camp under them too.
ReplyDeleteMuriel! Our fear too was the chicken turning to charcoal, since it laid right on the grill & not in a pan!?! But it didn't???? I thought when Lennie pulled it off the grill it would pull all the skin off the backside, nope...it was great. good thing too as we didn't have plan B for dinner! How did you like our cave pictures? I was pretty pleased the way they turned out inside the cave! Too bad we had the flat tire, but thank goodness for the Good Samaritan!
