June 16, 2015-Tuesday-This morning we pulled out of the Kellogg RV park in Kellogg, Iowa. It was a nice place to stay, it had everything we needed for one night!!!Our destination today is Independence, Missouri & I am happy to report as we travel along we see nothing but BLUE SKIES!!! Blue skies always makes traveling a lot more enjoyable. We kept going at a steady pace, didn't have far to go before we were saying GOOD-BYE to Iowa & HELLO to Missouri!!!
Time to stop at a rest area for a break & lunch!!!It was areal nice area, just what Otis needed!
Who's pets are these!?!
We had lunch, Lennie picked up some brochures, & back out on the highway!
We reach our destination, Campus RV Park in Independence, Missouri.
This is our home now for a week!
Looks like Otis is all in from a hard day of traveling, or could be because we're having chicken for dinner that he's just patiently waiting to eat!?!
We have been to Independence before, but I am still anxious to see what we're going to do while here. We may repeat some things while looking for something new to do, it's all good!!!!
June 17, 2015-Wednesday-We just spent a busy month in Illinois visiting family, friends, graduations, the Chicago Blues Festival, too much eating, plenty of loafing at the campgrounds, & oh yeah.....dodging lots of weekend rain! We are now beginning the travel, site-seeing, tourist attractions, part of our trip, &....we'll probably run into more rain, or at least some kind of "weather"!?!
The Campus RV park is walking distance to old downtown Independence, where all the history is! We're going to walk downtown today & see what we can see, & Otis is going to be a good boy & stay in the RV! He doesn't know he's going to be better off than we are! We're out walking in the heat & humidity, while he's back in the RV sucking up the A/C!?!(Sometimes I wish I was the family dog!?!)
We're off!
There are so many old historical homes in this area. There's probably a tour of historic homes!
This is just one of many, many Churches in this walking area. A lot of Mormon churches. Even our RV park if affiliated with the Latter Day Saints. This particular church, the First Presbyterian Church is where Harry Truman & Bess Wallace attend Sunday School as youngsters. Who knew the history these two would come to share!
We continued our walk through Independence history with a stop at the 1927 Log Courthouse. It also served as a Mormon
The Historic Truman Courthouse
All that history made us hungry for a quick bite to eat before our next page in history!Just a quick sandwich, but oh so good!!!!
Moving on we went to check on tickets for a Pioneer ride we'd heard about. The ride is presented by Ralph Goldsmith & his mule, giving you the opportunity to visit historic Independence Square & listening to Ralph tell stories that aren't in our history books....Only problem was....this tour was going to cost an arm & a leg & Lennie decided we didn't have one to spare!
We passed on that tour & in place we went to the 1859 Jail & Marshal's home Museum. this was a self guided tour, & very interesting! From the outside of the building, you couldn't tell it was a jailhouse.Inside either, because the Marshall & his family actually lived in the front of the building. The dungeon like cells were in the rear of the building.Had to be scary for the women raising their families just feet away from some of the deadliest prisoners of those times.
A small cell would sometimes house 20 prisoners!
One prisoner in particular had a few more comforts of home while in prison, that was none other than the infamous Frank James!
Frank James was treated more like a local hero than a prisoner
There was no heating or A/C in the prison, you might want to keep that in mind when you're doing your crime!?!
An 1870s one room school house sat at the rear of this property.
I wonder how hard it was for the kids to resist the temptation to cheat sitting that close to one another!?!
Lennie is NOT on Facebook & doesn't want to be but.....when he saw an advertisement (while walking) at a Frozen Yogurt shop to"LIKE US ON FACEBOOK" & receive 2 large filled cups for $7.00 he quickly asked me if I knew how to do that!?! After our prison tour it was time for yogurt!
Not a bad deal! wonder what else I can "LIKE" on Facebook!?!
We're going to start walking home now, Mr Otis is waiting for us in the luxury of the A/C!?! But first we walk by the Harry S. Truman house!
Everybody calls it Harry Truman's house, but the truth is, the house belonged to his wife, Bess' family. It was built by her grandfather.Harry & Bess lived in the house after their marriage, during his presidency & up until both their deaths.
This house, is almost as famous as the Truman house! It is the Nolan family house. Mrs Nolan was Harry Truman's Aunt. He had 2 female cousins that he just loved & spent as much time with them as possible. Or maybe it was because he had a crush on Bess Wallace the girl who lived across the street!?! During a visit to the Nolan family home he volunteered to return a cake plate to the Wallace home. The door was answered by Bess Wallace & the rest is sweet history!
From our RV park we can see this church.
It is the Community of Christ International Headquarters & it is huge! They actually have tours! One of the things they have is a Free Pipe Organ Recital. I hope before we leave this area we go listen to a Pipe Organ recital.
Our day ended with a beautiful sunset!
