June 28th-June 30, 2014-Zoo-Spa Day for Otis-Pikes Peak via Cog Railroad

Saturday June 28, 2014 Sorry Otis but after our regular morning routine.....things are going to change! You are staying home while Dad & I go to the Zoo.The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo to be exact! Let's potty walk Otis so we can go! We're not packing a picnic lunch either!!! Regardless what we  have planned today....we have to make sure we're home fairly early! It's Saturday & Saturday night is ICE CREAM night at Mountaindale RV Park!!!!
We're off, the Zoo is not that far away, just a short drive & we arrive! The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is the only Zoo in the mountains in the US!
It's really a nice zoo & once again I took toooo many pictures to post....!

I really liked the giraffe's....can you tell!?!

Riding the sky lift

Scared!?!

Our views from the sky lift....

Magpie, she can't escape my camera lens !

Mountain goat, got this shot from the sky lift!
Now some favorites! Let's start with lunch!

This is the best one!!!!
We watched as the Orangutan  positioned the above watermelon jar perfectly, so he could lay back & let the watermelon juice drip into his mouth!?! Talk about SMART & LAZY!!!!!
Our trip to the Zoo didn't end there, included in the price of the zoo was a drive through the zoo up a mountain road to Will Rogers Shrine Of The Sun. It looked like a small castle. This majestic structure is 2,000 feet above the city of Colorado Springs & 8,000 feet above sea level.Spencer Penrose commissioned architect Charles E. Thomas to build the monument. NO NAILS or WOOD were used in the building of this monument!Bound together by 200,00 pounds of steel & 30 wagon loads of cement!!!!
It was open to the public, you could go inside & walk up 94 STEPS for awesome views!!!

Distant view of Garden of the Gods
Distant view of Pikes Peak
Back down 94 steps (a lot easier!) at the base of the Memorial was a small but beautiful chapel. The remains of both Spencer & Julie Penrose are interred here at the chapel.
This Memorial "Castle" was erected after a plane crash over Alaska killed Will Roger & Wiley Post.
We better head back to the RV Park for a quick dinner! I told Lennie this morning when we were walking Otis, that there were a lot of kids at the park this week. You know what a lot of kids mean on Ice Cream night!?!                   Dinner's done time for ice cream!
Boy I was right!!!! When we got down to the office....we saw the longest line since we've been here!! After we got our ice cream, we just took it right back to our RV to enjoy!!!

& enjoy we did!!! We only have one more ice cream social left to enjoy here at Mountaindale RV Park!

Sunday June 29, 2014 We knew today was going to be a loafing day. For everyone except Otis, but Otis doesn't know that yet!?! Sunday's at the RV Lennie doesn't start the coffee cause coffee & sweet rolls are provided by the park! After breakfast I try to catch up on the blog. funny how sitting outside I can get a pretty good connection. We decided just to take it easy today because tomorrow we start our day early!!!! I got Saturday's Blog all caught up & now I have an unpleasant surprise for Otis!!! He's overdue for a haircut & another bath. I'm calling it Spa Day for Otis! He's calling it torture! Let's get it over with!!!
                                                        Not a happy camper!

His haircut is harder on me than it is on him!
Now that it's over....time for a bath!
Isn't he cute!

The rest of the day total relaxing, even for Otis! Our dinner was another experiment of sorts!?! But not on the grill! We threw together some ground turkey, added pineapple tidbits, onion, green pepper, egg, bread crumbs, seasoning, teriyaki sauce, formed it into the shape of a meatloaf & called it....we didn't know what to call it, maybe Hawaiian meatloaf? It tasted pretty good!
Early to bed tonight.....tomorrow our day is far from routine & it starts EARLY!!!!

Monday June 30, 2014 This is the morning that our routine changes! Oh Lennie is still up before 6:30am but instead of walking, he's in the shower! I don't like mornings, so I took my shower before bed! Otis is confused, he thinks he should be having quality time in bed with me, but surprise Otis....I'm not in bed, I'm getting ready for today's adventure! I'm skipping coffee to take Otis for a early morning potty walk. He doesn't know he's staying home!!! while Otis & I are at the dog park "taking care of business" Lennie finishes up & makes himself a coffee to go.
We're Off! This morning we're going up PIKES PEAK via the Cog Railroad & we have an early rail car!! We catch the train in Manitou Springs.
waiting for the train.....
& here it comes!
We are ready for a ride to the top of Pikes Peak for some awesome views!
Lennie & I have great seats for viewing the climb up!
It's an hours ride up to the top!
Then we arrive!
The end of the Line!

The original summit structure
First thing we do is have the famous donuts. We have 50 minutes on top before the Cog train heads back down the Peak
Views from  the top of Pikes Peak!!

a distant view of the road you can drive up the Peak
We've driven up before!
This is the view Kathleen Bates saw that inspired her to write her famous POEM "America  the Beautiful", later set to music as we now know it!!!
Soon enough it was time to board our train & head back down the peak!

Our conductor CJ at the wheel.
Heading down.....

Cars driving up to Pikes Peak
Another rail car passes us!
Great views!
Another rail car passes us before we arrive at the station back in Manitou Springs
The timing was just right! We get back to the Manitou Springs station at lunch time!We drive a short drive to Old Colorado City for our lunch!
Lunch was good!
I felt bad cause it was a dog friendly restaurant & our poor dog was back at the RV!! The people besides us had a big dog, Gracie, enjoying her own hamburger. the waitress even brought a dog bowl out to Gracie!! Okay Otis, we're done & we're on our way home to you!!!(without a McDoubles!!!
For dinner we made sloppy joes(with ground turkey!). Otis always wants some people food when we finish dinner....tonight he wanted some leftovers but during dinner it was raining including thunder so Otis was too nervous to come out from under the table! Don't worry Otis, we'll cater to your needs & serve you your leftovers under the table!
It was hard to walk Otis tonight, not so much the rain, but the thunder.....the end results were....Otis got to sleep with us. Secretly I believe Otis LOVES thunder storms, he knows he gets to sleep with us when it thunders!!!!
It was still a GOOD DAY!
